Center Connect: Project Background
In 2010, the Downtown Collierville Small Area Plan was adopted by the Town. The Plan focuses on Collierville's Historic Square and its surrounding neighborhoods with the goal of creating a shared, and formally adopted, vision for its future. To develop this vision, the Town held a community visioning exercise to gain ideas from the public on the future of Downtown. A steering committee was formed by Mayor Stan Joyner and was tasked with developing and refining a vision and plan for downtown. The steering committee had a week-long brainstorming session to review in-depth maps, sketches, example photos, and draft policies to create the Plan. By the end of that week, a vision had emerged: "the Square & Downtown Area should be both a destination and the heart of a vibrant and living neighborhood."
To improve transportation facilities for Downtown, the Plan specifically recommends improvements along Center Street, such as bike lanes, adequate and decorative sidewalks, clearly defined crosswalks, traffic calming techniques, additional on-street parking, improved wayfinding signage, pedestrian scale lighting, site furnishings, greenbelt trails, underground/relocated utilities, and landscaping. Furthermore, the new Plan contains specific polices and recommendations for infill/redevelopment, making Downtown Collierville more of a destination, and improving heritage tourism.
Collierville Center Connect is an important project to implement the Town's adopted vision for its Downtown and thusly makes Collierville's Square a more vibrant and accessible destination in West Tennessee.
